How long do cats live if they have diabetes ?

Question by Bum: How long do cats live if they have diabetes ?
My cat is about 9 years old, and she was diagnosed with diabetes today. L We’re gonna start feeding her specialized food. The vet told us it wouldn’t be worth it to give her insulin because we’d have to inject her twice a day and that it wouldn’t be worth it. How can I help her and how long will she live. What will the diabetes do to her in the future?
Thanks

What is the link between passive transport and diabetes?

Question by klenole: What is the link between passive transport and diabetes?
How does diabetes interfere with passive transport? I know it’s something to do with the insulin letting the glucose through.

Best answer:

Answer by micksmixxx
The link between passive transport and diabetes is to do with facilitated diffusion. This occurs when large molecules are ‘transported’ through the cell membrane using proteins embedded within the cell membrane. It requires insulin to ‘unlock’ the cell membrane so that glucose can pass through. i.e. insulin acts as a sort of key, allowing the cell membrane to open, as though it were a door.

The following web page explains passive transport quite well, though it doesn’t use the example of insulin as I have.

Question by Gabriella: What are the chances my kids could inherit diabetes from me?

`The American Diabetes Association has a page about this. It is not as simple percentages as blond hair, or blue eyes, and it somewhat depends on when you were diagnosed and a few other factors.

What if my gestational diabetes is just under control?

Question by cutegirl07: What if my gestational diabetes is just under control?
Hi i am currently 28 weeks pregnant and i got gestational diabetes and now i have to follow a proper diet and regular exercise and after all this my sugar level is controlled but sometimes its just under the required level, i mean sometimes it comes 6.9 or 7.0mmol/l after meal and 5.4 (fasting). So i was just wondering if its still not good for me and baby or there is nothing to worry on that?

I too had GD with my last pregnancy and if it is under then that is completely normal and fine, and reallllly good :O) you dont want it too low, besides you will feel when it gets too low…you get weak, lightheaded, dizzy, faint…..but you need to keep it so that it doesnt get too high….I had mine under control for the pregnancy and had a healthy 7 lb 3 oz baby boy :O)

How much does it cost to test a cat for diabetes?

Question by M S: How much does it cost to test a cat for diabetes?
I have a 5 year old, 13 pound tuxedo and am afraid she might have diabetes. Does anyone have an idea of what it would cost to get her tested? I can’t afford much. She eats all the food we leave out (part of the reason our other cat is never gains weight), she drinks a lot of water, and her fecal matter has a very unplesant aroma.

If it helps, I adopted her right after she turned 1 and it is highly likely she had kittens long before I got her.

They would need to do a complete blood panel to test for Diabetes and most vets charge around $ 100.00 for that.
